Week2 Part2

 The Body Shop

https://www.thebodyshop.com/en-us/

The Body Shop is a shop with a wide variety of skin care items like, face washes, toners, lotions, etc. They offer vegan and vegetarian items. The shops are usually on the smaller side but they are placed in a good amount of cities in California. They are an international company located in the United Kingdom.

The Body Shop does have links on their main website to their social medias that they use. They use Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, and Twitter. I don't have an Instagram but what I could tell it looks like they use Instagram a lot because they post on there and they have 2.4 million followers. On Pinterest it looks like they post a good amount but they only have 50,000 followers.

On Facebook it looks like they post more on there because they have 9.8 million followers. It looks like on Facebook they post about every other day, their last post was on February 2nd. I don't have a Twitter account either but from what I can see it looks like their presence isn't very strong compared to the other three social media platforms that they use.

The Body Shop from what I can see looks like they communicate well on social media but they communicate best on Facebook than their other social media accounts they have. Their two other social media accounts for Pinterest and Twitter look bleak and not used as often than their Instagram and Facebook accounts.

Lush

https://www.lushusa.com/

Lush is another shop that is in skin care and also have a wide variety in their products like, bath bombs, face washes, lotions, etc. Their products are vegetarian and are handmade. They are another small shop but are placed in a good amount of cities in California. They are another international company that is also located in the United Kingdom.

Lush does have links on their main website to their social media platforms that they use. On their website it shows they use Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and Pinterest. On Facebook it looks like they hardly ever post, they post probably once a year and only have 52,000 followers. For their Twitter account it looks like they post more than they do on Facebook because it shows that they post at least every other day and they have 286.7k followers. On their YouTube account it looks like they post every other month about routines for hair and skin care and they have 393,000 followers.

It looks like on their Instagram they have a bigger presence on there and looks like they post probably every other week or day and they have 4.2 million followers. On their Pinterest account it looks like they post not that much on there and they have 135,273 followers.

For Lush it looks like they communicate well on social media but not on all of their social media. On their Facebook and Pinterest accounts they hardly go on there and post so, they don't use those two accounts very well. But, on their other three there is more of a presence where they post about every other day or week.

Bath & Body Works

https://www.bathandbodyworks.com/

Bath & Body Works is a bigger store that offers even more of a variety than the other two shops I researched. They offer candles, lotions, perfumes, etc. But their products are not vegan or vegetarian but they are cruelty free. You can find a Bath & Body Works anywhere just like McDonalds. They are a national company that started and are still based in Albany, Ohio.

They have at the bottom of their main website all of their social media platforms that they use. B&BW uses Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Pinterest. On Facebook they have 10 million followers and they post every day on their account, their last post was six hours ago. For their Instagram account I was unable to look at the account because I don't have one. But for some reason I was able to see their Twitter account even though I don't have one. On that account it shows that they have 296.9k followers and it looks like they post every other day, their last post was six hours ago.

For their YouTube account they only have 23.8k followers and it looks like they post every other month, their last post was two weeks ago. On their Pinterest account they have 411,909 followers and it looks like they post maybe every other week.

Bath & Body Works communicate and interact well with their social media platforms they use but not on all of them. It looks like on their Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter account they post more on those platforms than they do with their YouTube account.

Burt's Bees

https://www.burtsbees.com/

Burt's Bees is a skin and hair care production that provide all natural and cruelty free products. They provide a wide variety of chapstick, makeup, lotion, etc. They do not have any shops but are sold in every shop or drug store. They are a national company located in Durham, North Carolina and they market internationally as well.

They show on their main website what social media platforms they are present on. Burt's bees uses these social media platforms; Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube. For their Facebook page they have 3.3 million followers it looks like they use to post every other day but their last post was on November 22, 2020. I was unable to see their Instagram due to not having an account with Instagram. On their Twitter account they have 100.3k followers and they post every other day on that account, their last post was two hours ago.

For their Pinterest account they have 45,906 followers and it looks like they post quite often on that account. On their YouTube account they have 26.3k followers and it looks like they post every other week.

Burt's Bees communicates and interacts with social media decently, they don't have that many followers on the accounts that they post the most on like; Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube. But for some reason on Facebook, the one account that they have the most followers on, they haven't posted on their for about three months.

Maui Moisture

https://www.mauimoisture.com/

Maui Moisture is a vegan and cruelty free production that provides not that wide of a variety like the other companies I researched. They also are not a shop but are sold in other stores. They have a small variety but a wide variety in shampoo's and conditioners but they also provide lotion as well. They are a national company located in Maui, Hawaii.

Maui Moisture provides on their main website what social media platforms they are on. The social media platforms they are on is Facebook and Instagram. They also provide next to the social media platforms they're on an email to get into contact with them. On their Facebook page they have 77,000 followers and they post every other day or week, their last post was on January 30. But for their Instagram I was unable to look at because I don't have an account.

From the limited use in social media platforms they use it looks like on Facebook they have a big presence and they communicate and interact well on that account.

Conclusion . . .

From doing this research I didn't realize that company's had so many different social media accounts they use. I also didn't realize that they lacked with keeping up their presence on certain social media platforms. For some reason I just assumed that big corporations were on top of all of their social media platforms that they are on. But for me it shows me that even big corporations are biased to what social media platforms they prefer to use and it shows when you do the research. Doing this showed me that the big corporations are not "perfect" and on "top" of things as I thought before.

I don't know if I live under a rock and I'm the only one that thinks big corporations come off as being perfect but just from a little research from the things I was able to see you can tell they lack on keeping their presence on certain ones. Most of the businesses had at least five platforms they were on but there was one that only had four and another that only had two. Which kind of shocked me with the lack of presence they have on social media. The one thing that also surprised me as well was that majority of the businesses I researched had a presence on YouTube. I didn't know big companies used YouTube to post videos of their products, how to use them, having others post for them a tutorial on routines to use the products.

The businesses I researched are some of my favorite businesses I like to use for skin and hair care products. I researched specifically this area of businesses because my hopes are to one day open my own skin and hair care products. As well as, candles and wax melts too. From doing this research on these businesses showed me that they are not personal with their consumers. But they make sure on their favorite platforms that their presence is strong and there which shows they're all about the consumption.

Comments

  1. Hi Sydney,
I use products from 3 of the 5 companies that you researched. It is fascinating how different companies use social media. In looking at other people's posts here, there are a large variety. The companies that I researched had much smaller followings than even your smallest company! When you start your skin care company, I bet you can find a niche and really work that segment. I think it is effective for what you are hoping to accomplish.

  2. Hi Sydney,
I went the same route as you did when choosing what area of business to research. Much like you having hopes of opening your own skin and hair care products one day, I have hopes of opening my own craft brewery. I was surprised at the lack of some businesses on social media as well. When I think of the big businesses I think that social media would be one of their main ways to advertise their new products.
    Good luck!
